Make Safety a Priority This Season
As a busy season and cold weather approach, safety should remain top of mind.
Whether you’re at home or traveling, there are precautions you should take to keep yourself, your loved ones and your property safe and secure.
Keep reading for a few quick tips that can help protect you this fall and winter.
Safety at Home
- Keep an eye on cooking food. When temperatures drop, you’re likely using the stove and oven for big meals. Remember to keep a watchful eye on any food you’re cooking to avoid house fires.
- Never leave heat sources unattended. Candles and fireplaces can add warmth and brightness to your home during the dark days of winter, but never leave those flames unattended. You should also be careful about where you place space heaters, and always turn them off when you leave the room.
- Talk to your neighbors. Are you leaving the cold behind by going on vacation? Be sure to let a couple of neighbors know you’ll be out of town so they can keep an eye on your house while you’re away.
Safety on the Road
- Don’t drive distracted. Icy roads make distracted driving even more dangerous than it is during other times of year. Place your phone somewhere safe, and keep your eyes on the road.
- Watch the weather. Check the weather forecast before you head out. If wet and icy conditions are expected, leave plenty of extra space between your car and the others on the road.
- Keep your car stocked. Put together an emergency kit for your car, just in case you find yourself stranded. You should at least have jumper cables, road flares, flashlights, a first-aid kit, water bottles, snacks and extra layers or blankets.
