Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: You might see these systems referred to as ADAS in your car search. They include many different safety features, such as sensors to detect when a driver is becoming drowsy, lane departure warnings and traffic signal recognition alerts.
Automatic Emergency Braking: Automatic emergency braking, or AEB, is designed to prevent potential collisions with pedestrians and other cars. If AEB sensors determine a crash is possible and the driver isn’t able to react in time, it will hit the brakes. These systems are set to become mandatory in new passenger cars by 2029. Vehicles with AEB and forward collision warning systems reduce crashes by 49% overall.
Blind Spot Monitoring: Blind spot monitoring is a safety feature that may be included with an ADAS. A car with this feature has sensors on its rear bumpers and cameras on its side mirrors to help ensure drivers don’t miss anything in their blind spots. It provides an alert, such as a flashing light, sound or vibration of the steering wheel, to let you know if there is another vehicle where you’re unable to see it.
Intersection Turn Assistance: About half of traffic injuries happen in intersections. Intersection turn assistance systems work with other systems to warn drivers of objects ahead when they are turning through an intersection. These systems can also slow the vehicle and apply the brakes to prevent collisions.
